-Located at the heart of New York City, in the middle of Manhattan, we are proud to be part of New York’s vibrant urban cultural mix. We offer a Ph.D. in French literature or in
French Studies.
-Our Program has unique curricular options, foremost a concentration in Human Rights and the Francophone World, which we were among the first to create within a French doctoral Program. We also have options in Performance Studies, Translation and French Cultural Studies.
-We are equally strong in Francophone and 21st-century literatures and cultures and in the medieval and early modern period.
-Our Program is markedly interdisciplinary and works with other disciplines, institutes and centers across The Graduate Center, an institution that ranks among the top five nationally in the Humanities.
-We are open to and encourage all cutting-edge theories, methodologies and approaches, including Digital Humanities applied to the French/Francophone field.
-It works closely with the prestigious Henri Peyre French Institute to promote the knowledge and understanding of French and Francophone cultures and literatures and to support the work of students [please visit at

-Our graduates have an excellent job placement rate (visit our alumni page) and our current students garner multiple forms of support for their research at early stages of their studies.
-We are happy to answer your questions by email, phone or in person. Please contact Professor Francesca Canadé Sautman, Acting Executive Officer,
