The Department of French and Francophone Studies at The Pennsylvania State University is recruiting outstanding candidates for advanced study leading to the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees. The next conference of the Society for Seventeenth-Century French Studies will take place at the University of St Andrews. In recognition of the tri-centenary of Louis XIV’s death, the theme is Kingship. Papers are invited on any aspect of this theme and need not be limited to Louis XIV. Possible subjects include:
· Kings: Henri IV, Louis XIII and Louis XIV
· Theories of Kingship; political theory
· Kings and other rulers (Emperors, Popes)
· Kingship and gender (Queens, Regents, la loi salique)
The Franco-British Network for Seventeenth and Eighteenth Century research is seeking panellists for ‘Social networks 1450-1850, an interdisciplinary conference at the University of Sheffield’. The panel title is Franco-British Social Networks in the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries. During these two periods of heavy cross channel conflict, networks and communities of residents of both France and the British Isles maintained connections, in a variety of different forms.
En France entre le XVIe siècle et le XIXe siècle, la vision de l'individu doté d'une liberté formelle fut confrontée à l'existence de l'esclavage aux colonies, en particulier lorsqu'à partir de 1716 une exception au principe du sol libre fut octroyée aux planteurs qui souhaitaient amener en métropole leurs esclaves domestiques. Tout un appareil juridique dut être créé pour accommoder cette exception. Le présent ouvrage cherche à illustrer les différentes étapes que prit cette recherche d'un équilibre entre liberté et esclavage.

Une série de recueils collectifs de poésie satyrique (satire inspirée de la figure du satyre grec), parfois brutale à l’égard des adversaires qu’elle se donnait, mais aussi grivoise, obscène, érotique ou pornographique, parut en France entre 1600 et 1622 : cinquante-trois volumes (édités rapidement, de manière souvent négligée), environ mille six-cent poèmes et cent cinquante poètes identifiables envahirent la marché de la librairie.
Le projet IdT propose une réflexion sur les textes liminaires placés en tête des pièces françaises, italiennes et espagnoles des XVIe et XVIIe siècles — préfaces, dédicaces, etc. — susceptibles de mettre en évidence la construction et la circulation des « idées du théâtre » en Europe, de la Renaissance à l’âge classique.
